Connecting the two communities of Oak Cliff: Construction is underway on the first phase of South Gate Park.

DALLAS. Significant progress has been made in preparation for the construction of South Gate Park in Dallas.

The massive concrete table has now been erected over Interstate 35 between Ewing and Marsalis Avenues in the Oak Cliff area. This is a sign that change is coming to South Dallas in the form of new green spaces.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve made it this far,” said April Allen, President and CEO of the Southern Gateway Green Foundation.

The first phase of construction of the South Gate Park is underway. A five-acre bridge park, or deck park, is being built over the highway near the Dallas Zoo.

“I think this park will be a catalyst for investment in our community,” Drexell told Owus of the Dallas Foundation.

The new deck park will have many features, rides and amenities. There will be a stage pavilion for concerts and performances. Visitors will love the water features, wide open lawn, and hiking trails. There will be a large playground.

Visitors will also enjoy the two-story food and drink building with rooftop seating, among other things.

“In the first phase of this park alone, there will be almost two football fields,” Owusu said.

The organizers say they are making great progress. Two-thirds of the funding for the completion of the first phase of the deck park has already been secured. Supporters are still working to raise about $13 million more.

“I am very excited to be able to share that our goal is to really start construction this June and open the first phase of the park to the public by the end of next year,” Allen said.

Not only will Southern Gateway Park provide much-needed green space, it will also connect two Oak Cliff communities that have been separated for decades.
