Colorado man deliberately drives pickup truck into police department lobby ‘to be heard’: police

Colorado police are charging a man with deliberately driving his pickup truck into the lobby of a police station on Tuesday in an attempt to “be heard.”

A Grand Junction Police Department spokesman said Nathan Chacon, 45, drove his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado into the police station’s lobby on Wednesday afternoon at around 12:30 p.m., adding that “miraculously” no one was hurt.

The arrest affidavit states that “there was no hesitation, stop, or slowdown before the truck turned straight for the main lobby doors, accelerated, and went through two sets of metal doors with bulletproof window panes.”

During the incident, eleven employees worked behind walls with windows that prevented the pickup truck from causing any damage or injury to the building and its occupants.

The police officer who wrote the arrest statement said the pickup truck drove through several benches in the lobby that are used by citizens who are waiting to either “claim that they are the victim of a crime or get some help from the police department.” “.

“Fortunately, no one was using the benches or in the lobby at the time of this crash, which would have been normal on a weekday around 12:30,” the affidavit read.

Chacon told investigators he thought he was “chased” by several cars after he left his house on Wednesday morning, adding that he “became paranoid about those cars and started making erratic turns and swerved into alleyways to avoid these cars.”

The man told investigators that he “decided to drive into the lobby” because he did not want to be killed, but did so in order to “be heard,” the affidavit says, adding that Chacon “knew it was stupid.”

Chacón is charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, attempted vehicular murder, reckless driving, attempted vehicular assault, criminal disorderly conduct, and reckless endangerment.

According to the document, the records show that “over the past few years, there have been at least 90 calls for help involving Nathan when he reports strange occurrences that have no basis in fact.”

“Some of these appeals for help in the last days leading up to this event hint that Nathan was disappointed in the deputies, as he hung up and cursed at them on the phone,” the affidavit says.
