Cleanup efforts with SCCF focus on returning beaches to normal

LEE COUNTY, Florida. The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation is working to bring beaches back to normal in the wake of Hurricane Jan.

On Tuesday, volunteers clean up the western beaches from Tarpon Bay Road to Blind Pass.

The beaches at Sanibel and Captiva have not been open to the public since Hurricane Jan.

Debris is still scattered on some beaches and the group will focus on that.

The SCCF said that these cleanup efforts not only help to complement the cleanup of large debris taking place on the island, but also help protect wildlife and people.

The beaches here will also be part of Tuesday’s city council meeting, as attendees talk about restoring the resorts and how many square feet the sites will have to allocate for recreational space if they decide to rebuild.

SCCF will continue to clean up the beaches. The conservation organization encourages volunteers to sign up for future cleanups.
