City announces payment package for Austin Police Department

The City of Austin has announced details of its pay package for Austin Police Department officers.

The plan will offer promotions for officers below the rank of assistant chief and incentives for new cadets and serving officers.

The pay package is the result of an Austin City Council resolution passed unanimously on February 23 that directed interim city manager Jesús Garza to come up with a plan.

The plan includes the following:

Additional provisions under the plan include continued seniority pay, field training officer pay, mental health certification pay, bilingual pay, differentiated shift pay, assistant chief pay, and others.

The ordinance was originally introduced by Councilman Ryan Alter (District 5), which was approved as a replacement proposed by Mayor Watson. Council members Alison Alter (District 10), José Velasquez (District 3), José “Chito” Vela (District 4), and Leslie Poole (District 7) joined the co-authors.

Mayor Watson and Councilman Ryan Alter also noted the contributions to the ordinance by Councilman Mackenzie Kelly (District 6), who wanted to find ways to incentivize officers living in the city, and Zohaib “Zo” Kadri (District 9), who also added to the decree.
