New York building apartment once decorated by Matisse is up for sale for $1.85 million

Henri Matisse painted on the roof of this building in Manhattan when his youngest son Pierre lived there. There is even a photograph of Matisse himself painting on the roof, displayed in the lobby of Stewart Hall, 10 Mitchell Place, taken around 1930 during one of his visits to New York.

Pierre owned the adjacent Pierre Matisse Gallery at 41 E. 57th St. in the Fuller Building until his death in 1989.

Now, an apartment in a building between Beekman Place and First Avenue on 49th Street, owned through trust to television ad producer Elaine Sloan, is up for sale for $1.85 million.

The late pioneering journalist Lorena Alice “Hick” Hickok, a close friend and lover of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, lived across the hall from the Sloan residence. According to reports, Hickok was a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune and the Associated Press before she left the AP to move to the White House.

The legal owner of the Sloan Unit is the Don Sloan Fifth Trust. (Wealthy people often buy property in trusts because it gives them tax advantages.) Approximately 1,950-square-foot apartments with three to four bedrooms, 2½ bathrooms, three wood-burning fireplaces, and views north of private gardens and brownstones.

The residence features an open living/dining area with adjoining breakfast bar and sliding doors leading to a library with built in banquet chairs and a full size pull out bed. The house has plenty of built-in wardrobes and storage space, as well as new double glazed windows and building permit for a washer/dryer.

Built in 1928, the building boasts an “Old World” mahogany-panelled lobby and an iconic rooftop terrace overlooking the East River and the Chrysler and Empire State buildings.

The listing broker is Pavel Zustyak of Douglas Elliman.
