Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Proposes Street Vendors to Stop Cash to Stop Theft

Chicago Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot has suggested that street vendors go cashless to prevent robberies.

Lightfoot made her stunning comment during a mayoral debate last Thursday night. She said she was working with street vendors to potentially get them to forgo cash due to a surge in theft.

“I heard a lot of rhetoric here, a lot of sound, but not so many concrete decisions about how we do work and keep our residents and our workers safe. We do this every single day,” Lightfoot said, adding:

We’ve been to Little Village, working with these street vendors, understanding what the crime is, making sure we work with them to help them, make sure their money is safe. Do not use money, if at all possible, using other forms of transactions to conduct yourself.

Lightfoot said these stores can “protect themselves” by not accepting cash.

“We were in Little Village working with these vendors to the best of our ability to make sure they do what they can do to protect themselves, like not using cash, making sure the cash they accept is in security,” she said.

As noted by Fox News, publicly available data shows that Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood “in 2022 saw a 13% increase in robberies compared to 2021, with 477 robberies in 2022.”

So far in 2023, the number of robberies in the 10th district has already increased by 114% compared to the same period in 2022, when there were 30 robberies this year.

Citywide, shootings decreased by 20% in 2022 compared to 2021, violent crime increased by 41% overall.

There were 8,996 robbery reports in 2022, compared to 7,911 in 2021.

Despite these sobering numbers, Lightfoot insists that her criminal plans have worked. Earlier this month she general a Twitter campaign ad claiming she got more cops out on the street.

“In terms of fighting crime in our city, I have a plan and it is working,” she said.

When Lightfoot’s opponent Paul Wallas said that “crime in Chicago is out of control”, Lightfoot responded:

Paul, do your homework. We are already doing all of this – bringing dangerous people to justice, fighting gangs and gun violence, making fair investments in our communities – and will continue to make Chicago safer. There is still much to be done, but we are on the right track.

As noted by Breitbart News, “The Chicago Police Department released major crime figures in 2022 showing crime up 41 percent. In addition, since Lightfoot took office three years ago, crime has risen by 33 percent.”
