ChatGPT encourages lawmakers to call for AI regulation

The rise of chatbot ChatGPT, with its ability to generate informed, complex text, is prompting lawmakers to push for government intervention in the field of artificial intelligence.

Both Democrats and Republicans are increasingly concerned about the development of new artificial intelligence technologies and how they can affect society if there are no rules in place.

“Obviously, I think we need to pay close attention to this,” Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri, told Fox News when asked about how Congress could approach AI.

Others have used ChatGPT itself to illustrate their point that Congress needs to act, and fast. Rep. Ted Liu, D-Calif., wrote a New York Times op-ed on the subject earlier this week and even used ChatGPT to write the first paragraph, prompting “Write an attention-grabbing first paragraph of OSes.” Why artificial intelligence should be regulated.

Lew noted in the article that, with a degree in computer science, he is “enthusiastic” and “excited” about artificial intelligence, but warned that “as a member of Congress, AI scares me, especially AI that is not controlled.” and unregulated.

Lew is pushing for a federal agency to regulate AI so experts can propose rules, although he admits it will be a difficult task.

Auchincloss warned that lawmakers are falling too far behind AI technology, comparing the situation to social media, which has grown so fast that Congress has not been able to keep up.
