Central Coast Law Enforcement Talks About Tyre Nichols Attack Video

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV) – Several Central Coast law enforcement officials have reacted to a video released by police of a beating that killed a father in Memphis, Tennessee.

In early January, five Memphis police officers attacked Tyre Nichols, brutally enough that he died a few days later. Central Coast law enforcement and officers from across the country repeated the same report about the actions of these officers.

This is not what good law enforcement officers do. Memphis Police Chief Serelyn Davis said ahead of the video’s release, “You’re going to see action that defies humanity.” You will see a disregard for life,” Davis said. “A duty to take care of what we all swore. And a level of physical interaction that exceeds the requirements of law enforcement.”

Coastal Police Chief Nick Borges said the following:

Tyre, I’ve never met you and never will again. I never wanted to be a cop. As a child at risk, I have seen firsthand how some police officers abuse their power and betray public trust. What happened to you is a reminder of why I became a cop and later got promoted to change the culture of policing in my area.

I wish I was in Memphis with you that night. I wish there was a police officer from Primorye at the scene. I would stop them. We would stop this.

I promise your death will not be in vain. We will honor your life to make the police better. We will continue to guard the police with love and exercise self-control. We will train to be efficient and sensible in our tactics. We have the courage to intervene if any police officer fails to follow the law, and I promise that I will hold anyone who fails to do so accountable.

I wish this never happened. It can’t be changed, but your legacy will change police work for the better. You will save lives and expose corrupt cops across the country.

Thanks Tyre. Rest well. We’ll take it from here….

“I am absolutely disgusted by the actions of the five Memphis police officers, and I am heartbroken for the family and friends of Tyre Nichols,” said San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor. “I pray for his loved ones and the Memphis community.”

I am saddened, upset and horrified by the murder of Tyre Nichols. The actions of the five Memphis police officers we witnessed are alarming and have no place in policing.

As peace officers, we are sworn to protect and serve, and for the police to maintain their legitimacy, incidents like this must stop now. Five officers have been arrested and their actions will be taken to court, but the impact of this killing will be felt in communities across the country.

To Mr. Nichols’ friends and family—and to the people of Memphis—I offer my deepest condolences. To Our Community: We will continue to educate and work with our community partners, organizations and others to ensure our county has the quality policing it deserves.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart

The Monterey County Law Enforcement Leaders Association stated the following:

Today, the Monterey County Law Enforcement Leaders Association released a statement regarding the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee.

We have all recently become aware of the events surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police officers in Memphis, Tennessee. We expect the Memphis Police Department to release video of the incident today, which Memphis Police Chief Serelyn Davis called “disgusting, reckless and inhumane.” Chief Davis goes on to say, “I expect you to resent the disregard for basic human rights as our police officers are sworn to do the opposite of what is seen on the video.”

As Monterey County law enforcement leaders, we offer our deepest condolences to the Nichols family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nichols family, friends, colleagues and the community. We also acknowledge the pain this event is causing to all communities as the actions of these police officers reverberate across all police officers and rightfully raise questions and concerns about law enforcement behavior around the world.

Any wrongful death at the hands of police officers is horrific and unforgivable. Any police brutality or police inaction causes disgust and outrage among everyone, including police officers.

The ex-policemen involved in this were prosecuted and fired. The intended actions of these former officers are contrary to the values and expectations of all who serve in our organizations. Actions like this dishonor the law enforcement profession and dishonor officers across the country who work selflessly every day to protect their communities.

As leaders of the police force, we ensure that those who serve our communities in law enforcement place the sanctity of human life and constitutional protection for all as the basis for every action they take. This includes a deep commitment to serving with honor, dignity, justice, and respect for all.

We remain committed to working together in partnership with community members, advocacy organizations, elected officials and others to ensure that our organizations live up to the expectations our communities have.

As law enforcement leaders in our communities, we also want to thank the women and men in our organizations who have chosen to serve with the highest integrity and uphold their oath.
