Businesses in Galveston prepare for large crowds ahead of spring break

Businesses on the Galveston Islands are gearing up for what they hope and expect to be a busy spring break.

“We are very excited about the start of the high season,” said Bubba bartender Misty Smith.

Bubba’s and other local waterfront bars and restaurants such as the Shark Shack say business is booming this time of year.

“We are the playground for Houston and they really support us,” said Shark Shack owner Allen Flores. “We just get a combination of things, we have a little cruising activity, we have people who travel for the day. But I know that hotels are really doing well during spring break.”

Flores said businesses are seeing significant revenue growth.

“During the week, our business grows probably 50% more than on a typical weekday, and on the weekends we probably double our revenue,” Flores said.

Rescuers are also preparing for the influx of visitors.

Peter Davis, chief of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, said three to five hundred thousand people were expected.

“So what we’re doing is taking the staff that we have, we’re going to pick really busy areas and areas that could potentially be dangerous, like near the dock, and if we have enough, we’ll go to beach parks. and beaches. the rest of the beach,” Davis said.
