Brian McCarthy: Esteemed Photojournalist Remembered

TRENTON, NJ (MERCER)–The MidJersey News team is deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of Brian McCarthy, a veteran news photographer and videographer. Brian, who had been with MidJersey News from its inception, passed away on November 28, 2023, after a brief hospital stay. Over the past four years, his exceptional photographs have graced the pages of this publication. With a career spanning almost half a century, Brian expertly captured moments with presidents, politicians, Hollywood actors, rock stars, race car drivers, and athletes. He fearlessly documented both the chaos of combat overseas and the resilience of peaceful protests at home. From community events to charitable fundraisers and parades, Brian’s lens effortlessly portrayed the essence of these occasions. However, his most remarkable work centered around the selfless actions of firefighters, police officers, emergency medical professionals, and the military in the Mercer County area. Responding to fires, accidents, crimes, and other breaking news incidents, Brian aimed to showcase the tireless efforts of these dedicated individuals, rather than exploit the tragedies they faced. He believed in revealing the heroism and humanity of first responders, providing the public with a glimpse into their unwavering commitment. As a result of his unwavering dedication, Brian earned the respect and admiration of countless members within the emergency services community. Tributes and cherished memories of Brian have poured in on his Facebook page, shared by active and retired firefighters, police officers, EMTs, as well as devoted friends and fans. Throughout his illustrious career, Brian served as an assignment photographer for United Press International and worked as a freelancer for Trenton’s two daily newspapers, in addition to various other publications. His esteemed reputation led him to become a publisher in his own right, with several community news publications under his belt. As technology advanced, his work became increasingly accessible, making appearances across popular social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Brian’s videos often began with his familiar introduction, “I’m Brian McCarthy, and you’re on scene with me at… Let’s see what’s going on.” In these videos, he consistently endeavored to inform and educate his viewers about ongoing events, as well as the tireless efforts of emergency personnel working to ensure the safety of others. Born in Massachusetts, Brian relocated to New Jersey when his father, Walter “Pep” McCarthy, was appointed as the freshman football coach at Princeton University in 1960. Following a successful ten-season coaching stint, “Pep” McCarthy transitioned into prominent administrative roles within the university’s athletics department. Tragedy struck Brian’s family with the passing of his mother, Ruth, in 1973, and the untimely demise of his father in a car accident in 1977. MidJersey News extends heartfelt condolences to Brian’s daughter, Shannon, as well as his sister, Lauren, and brother, Sean, during this difficult time.
