Boulder Creek family once again forced to rebuild home after recent storm

A family from Boulder Creek is experiencing a second major blow from Mother Nature.

For the past 2.5 years, the Fleger family has been hard at work rebuilding it after the 2020 CZU fire destroyed it.

“Probably about two months ago. Everything started to change. My family started acting like my family again because we knew we were going to move home,” said Jason Fleger.

But just a day before the county was due to conduct a final inspection so the family could finally return, the storm dealt a devastating blow.

“We were going to take our lives back. Start moving home with the whole family. And when we found out that a tree had fallen on the house, it was just devastating, ”said Shannon Fleger.

Now everything is back to normal: The Flegers, who work as nurses and were on the front lines during the pandemic, must rebuild their house again.

“A complication that we did not foresee broke into our lives and prevented us from returning to our home,” said Jason Fleger.

“We were just waiting to get back here to get our shelter back,” Shannon Fleger told NBC Bay Area on Thursday.

Friends and family have created GoFundMe to help.

Despite the difficulties, the family said they still love Mother Nature. They added that redwoods have taught them to be resilient no matter what comes their way.

“The trees were burned, they were scorched, the ground was still smoking under them, and green shoots sprouted from the sequoia. It inspired us,” said Jason Fleger.

Fleger’s family said the new damage would likely take months to repair.

“This is such a great place for our family. We love our land. We just want to come back here. And we can’t wait to get back,” Shannon Fleger said.
