Biden’s 50,000 Afghans cost taxpayers $189 million in damage to US military bases

The nearly 50,000 Afghans that the Joe Biden administration deployed to five United States military bases in the months leading up to 2021 and early 2022 cost taxpayers nearly $189 million in property damage, according to a federal report.

Following the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Afghanistan in August 2021, Biden opened a refugee channel that resettled more than 86,000 Afghans in American communities, many of whom did not pass pre-screening or face-to-face interviews.

Tens of thousands of these Afghans were initially stationed at eight US military bases, including 50,000 who were purpose-built at Fort Bliss in Texas, Fort Lee in Virginia, Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, Fort Pickett in Virginia and Camp Atterbury in Indiana.

Officials at these five US bases, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General (DOD IG), noted nearly $189 million in damage that taxpayers would have to pay on the bill to fix.

As first reported by Wisconsin Right Now, Fort McCoy faced the highest cost in terms of damages to accommodate the more than 12,700 Afghans who remained at the facility.

In total, the Afghans caused over $145 million worth of damage to the base, including problems with walls, ceilings, floors, doors, bathrooms, plumbing, electrical systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, exterior siding, and much of the facility’s barracks.

At Fort Bliss, Afghans stationed at the base caused $575,000 worth of damage to mattresses and beds, and $632,000 worth of damage to floors, ceiling tiles, and electrical systems at Fort Lee.

Meanwhile, at Fort Pickett, Afghans caused more than $26 million worth of damage to walls, doors, plumbing, HVAC systems, fire alarms and other items. Damage at Camp Atterbury amounted to $16 million in replacement mattresses and furniture, as well as repairs to floors, doors, windows, plumbing, fire alarms, and landscaping.
