A doctor biking in the Orange County seaside area of Dana Point, California, was hit by a car and then allegedly stabbed on Wednesday afternoon, as onlookers watched in horror.

Dr. Michael John Mammon, 58, died shortly after being allegedly attacked by Vanroy Evan Smith, 39, of Long Beach, California. The first responders arrived while Mammon was still alive, but were unable to save him.

Los Angeles Times reported:

The attack took place around 3:00 pm Wednesday on the Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway. [Orange County Sheriff’s Department] says in a press release.

Mammon was cycling north on the Pacific Coast Highway when the driver hit him from behind, authorities said.

The driver, 39-year-old Long Beach resident Vanroy Evan Smith, got out of the car and attacked Mammon with a knife, police said.

Police are reportedly unsure if the men knew each other.

Crime has increased in California in recent years, attributed to a number of factors, including: the overly ambitious prison reform made possible by Proposition 47 in 2014; the Black Lives Matter movement, which undermined respect for law enforcement and forced cuts to the police budget in many cities; phasing out bail for pre-trial detainees; an increase in drug addiction and homelessness.

Dana Point recently hosted a meeting of the Republican National Committee.
