Authorities say suspect shot dead after car theft, lead officers on long chase near Lake Jackson

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — An investigation is underway after a suspect was shot and killed by Lake Jackson police officers Thursday morning.

Lake Jackson police received several calls about a man reportedly in a trash can outside OM Roberts Elementary School on the 100 block of Cedar Street around 10 a.m.

Before the police arrived, the man allegedly stole a truck from someone nearby and drove away, leading the police in pursuit.

Authorities said the suspect was driving through several county and farm-to-market roads, where at one point he reportedly crashed into an innocent person’s car and a police car and attempted to run over a police officer. No harm done.

Texas Department of Public Safety soldiers joined in the pursuit, where they used spikes that blew the truck’s tires and crashed into a ditch.

Authorities surrounded the vehicle as the suspect got out. Police said he attacked two Lake Jackson officers with a large knife.

The police then pulled out their weapons and fired several shots at the suspect. He died at the scene.

The Lake Jackson Police Department said the officers who shot the suspect have been placed on paid leave as the investigation continues.

No additional injuries reported.
