Austin man threatened with fine for breaking code after suspected drunk driver rammed guest bedroom

Chris Newby was fast asleep in the early hours of January 19 when a suspected drunk driver crashed into the spare bedroom of his home in Austin, Texas.

The window frame caved in, the bricks on the outside crumbled, and the TV set was torn down, leaving Newby in the unenviable position of remodeling much of his home.

The Austin Code Department added insult to injury by sending a January 19 letter to Newby informing him that he must fix his home within 30 days or face a fine of up to $2,000 a day for the violation.

“Each window, skylight, door and frame must be kept in good repair, serviceable and weathertight,” reads one of the violations.

Another violation stated that “all exterior walls must be free of holes, tears, loose or rotting materials.”

The Austin code department did not respond to a request for comment Monday, but Newby said his contact there agreed to give him some leeway.

“The last time I spoke to the coding officer, he said it was a standard email that he had to send as a matter of policy,” Newby told Fox News Digital. “He said he would give me enough time to fix it, but the restoration is almost complete.”
