Audio reveals chaotic moments before airport collision

The two planes nearly collided at the airport, and an audio recording of the incident was released.

Gayle King explained during a CBS Mornings segment, “There’s a near-collision at New York JFK airport being investigated right now. Officials say an American Airlines jet overran the runway where a Delta flight was accelerating before takeoff Friday night.”

The network played an audio recording of the moments leading up to the incident, and air traffic control said, “Damn. Delta 1943, cancel takeoff plans!

The Delta flight was bound for the Dominican Republic with 151 passengers on board.

An American Airlines flight was bound for London with 137 passengers on board.

Robert Sumwalt, an aviation security analyst, spoke online about the incident.

“Any time you have a runway invasion like this, chances are that very bad things can happen,” Sumwalt said.

When asked what investigators hope to piece together, Samwalt explained: “NTSB [National Transportation Safety Board] will want to understand what happened. Why did it happen? Was there something distracted in the cockpit of the American aircraft?”

He continued: “Was there any misunderstanding regarding the authorization of air traffic control.”

Delta released a statement saying the airline “will be working with the aviation authorities and assisting them in a full review of the 1943 flight on January 13th regarding the aborted takeoff procedure at New York-JFK.”

The statement said: “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and the delay in their travel.”
