At least five people have died, including two children, in a fire at a Rockland County home.

At least five people were killed, including two children, and several others were injured when a fire broke out at an apartment building in Rockland County early this morning, officials said.

Late Saturday night, the facade of the off-white two-story home was almost completely blackened, and flames engulfed the back of the timber-framed home. Approximately half of the roof of the house collapsed, and the clapboard walls were hollowed out.

Firefighters were called to a house on Lake Street in the village of Spring Valley, where two families lived, at 4:03 am, officials said at a news conference. At 4:40 the fire was extinguished.

They made several attempts to break into the building and help the people inside, but the initial conditions of the fire made it “impossible” to break into the house, Rockland County Fire Coordinator Christopher Keir said.

They were only able to start searching for the missing residents after the flames were put out.

“Unfortunately, there was a lot of bail during the incident,” County Executive Ed Day said.

According to Cyrus, three of the victims were found on the second floor and two on the first floor, likely due to the collapse of the second floor. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Another five people were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital. One of the firefighters who arrived at the scene of the fire was slightly injured, he was treated on the spot.

According to Cyrus, the wounded were found outside the building. One jumped out of a second floor window.

The number of people living in the building is not specified. The nature of the victims’ relationship is unknown, but the county chief said they were believed to be family members.

Saturday’s fire originated near the site of the massive Evergreen Court adult home fire that occurred in March 2021, when one resident and one volunteer firefighter died in the blaze.

As a result of the devastating fire, Rockland County took over Spring Valley Building Inspection.

District Buildings and Standards Director Ed Markūnas said the Lake Street building had previously cited a number of violations that were subsequently corrected in the building’s most recent inspection.

Spring Valley Village Trustee Zach Clerina told The Post that even though the county was tasked with surveying the buildings in the village, his community once again had to endure yet another fatal fire tragedy.

“The county has taken responsibility and then we should have some relief,” he said. “Things like this shouldn’t happen again. [so] soon like this. It’s too fast.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
