“The community mourns the loss of a teacher, leader and dear friend in yesterday’s horrific accident. As you can imagine, this is heartbreaking,” Malisa’s family said in a statement obtained by KPNX. “Karen’s laughter, smile and endless energy will be missed by all who have had the honor of calling her their friend.”

Another 11 patients were taken to three different district hospitals with various injuries, one of whom is in critical condition, according to police.

Police added that one of the dead was a local Goodyear resident, while the other came from out of state.
