An MDPD officer shot and killed a man in the parking lot of Homestead Publix after hours.

Homestead, Florida. (WSVN) — A man has died after being shot by an off-duty Miami-Dade police officer in the parking lot of a Publix supermarket in Homestead, police said.

A disturbing mobile phone video captured the moment before the shooting at Oasis Plaza, located on the 2900 block of Northeast Eighth Street, Saturday night.

Miami-Dade Police, Homestead and Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue teams arrived at the scene of the shooting around 6:15 p.m.

According to investigators, the man fired a pistol in the parking lot.

Mobile phone video shows a security guard and Homestead police officers demanding the man drop his weapon.

“After the arrival of the police, several commands are given to lower this firearm. He refuses,” said MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

It was then, according to detectives, that the duty officer of the MDPD intervened, who showed up to help.

“One of our duty officers, when he sees what is happening, immediately starts helping fellow officers, and at that moment shots were fired and our officer hit the target,” Zabaleta said.

Shopper Janet Kaufman said she and her husband were in a busy supermarket when the situation turned into chaos.

“Suddenly we hear screams and then gunshots,” she said.

Moments later, Kaufman said Publix employees escorted shoppers to the back of the store and opened the back exits.

“It was like slow motion and we see a Publix employee telling us, ‘OK, everybody run back,'” she said. “It’s becoming chaos, people are pushing each other.”

Paramedics airlifted the man to Jackson South Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, police said.

Back at the scene of the shooting, mobile phone footage also recorded an active police presence in the parking lot.

Like many other witnesses, Kaufman said she was shocked.

“It’s very scary. I think something needs to be done about gun control,” she said.

The police never identified the man who was shot, but they said they would have more information in the coming days.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
