Here’s how rare thunderstorms are in the San Francisco Bay Area

San Francisco residents don’t see lightning strike the city as often as they did on Tuesday. In fact, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the least likely locations for thunderstorms in the entire country.

A look at data from the Iowa Environment Maisonette at Iowa State University reveals that since 2005, only 37 thunderstorm warnings have been issued in the San Francisco Bay Area, the third lowest of any region in the US.

There are not many thunderstorms in areas along the Pacific coast. The Thunderbolt needs warm air to rise and face the falling cold air, but the Pacific Ocean keeps temperatures relatively constant along the coast. But even on the West Coast, San Francisco is an exception: Los Angeles and Portland have three times as many storm warnings as the Bay Area.

People in other parts of the country scoff at the science fiction excitement about lightning. This is because in some cities it is literally an everyday occurrence.

In fact, Norman, Oklahoma, America’s thunderstorm capital, has received more than 12,000 thunderstorm warnings since 2005 – an average of about 1.8 in a day and more than double the number of other cities in the top ten thunder cities such as Memphis, Rapid City and Fort Worth.
