An Iowa teenager on Monday pleaded guilty to killing his parents in 2021, using a knife and an ax to kill them to “take charge of his life.”

Ethan Alexander Orton pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents Casey Arthur Orton, 42, and Misty Scott-Slade, 41, of Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids police were called around 2 a.m. on October 14, 2021 to check for suspicious sounds coming from the house and found that 17-year-old Orton was covered in blood. He told police he stabbed his parents and then used the hatchet on his mother when she appeared to be alive, according to the criminal complaint.
