American football star says trans players ‘do not pose a threat to women’s sports’

US Women’s National Team (USWNT) player Becky Sauerbrunn wrote an op-ed calling on lawmakers in her home state of Missouri to propose a law that would ban male biological athletes who identify as women from participating in women’s sports.

V Springfield News Anchor On Sunday, Sauerbrunn argued that “playing with or against transgender women and girls poses no threat to women’s sports.”

“The proposed ‘Women’s Sports Rescue Act’ does nothing to protect or support girls and women in sports,” Sauerbrunn writes. “If those who are pushing for this legislation really listened to the needs and concerns of women in sports, they would set out clear steps to protect women and girls from the rampant sexual violence and harassment that plagues sports, issues that we fight at the NWSL. They will explain what is being done to ensure that all institutions in Missouri are Title IX compliant. They will outline a plan to promote equal pay for female athletes. They will provide young women and girls with equal opportunities in sports, especially girls and girls of color. Instead, they are pushing kids away from the life-changing power of sport, forever depriving them of the invaluable lessons that sport teaches and the best friends they could have on their teams.”

Of course, it is safe to say that the protection of women from assault and harassment is one of the main goals that legislators try to achieve with their legislation. There have been several proven and alleged cases of transgender individuals harassing or assaulting biological women in locker rooms and swimming pools in states that allow men who identify as women to associate with women.

“I’ve been an advocate for gender equality in sports for a long time and I’m fed up with seeing trans youth brutally targeted to score political points,” Sauerbrunn continued. “Transgender people are just them, people, not tools that can be used to climb the political ladder. I’m not alone – hundreds of other elite athletes, from Billie Jean King to Candace Parker, have constantly voiced loud protests against bills almost identical to those before the Missouri Senate. Thousands of college athletes have signed letters in support of transgender athletes and against similar discriminatory bills.”

On the other hand, several well-known female athletes have also spoken out against men being allowed to compete against women. On Sunday, for example, professional surfer Bethany Hamilton expressed her disagreement with the World Surf League’s new policy of allowing transgender athletes to compete in the women’s division, announcing that she would not compete in any competition in which men compete.

In addition, tennis legend Martina Navratilova and British champion swimmer Sharron Davis also spoke out against allowing trans competitors in the women’s division.

Although, in addition to the fact that trans athletes pose an obvious physical threat to women in locker rooms, Sauerbrunn’s claim that male athletes do not pose a threat to women’s sport in general is also untrue, as Sauerbrunn herself must know.

In 2017, MLS FC Dallas’ boys’ under-15 team defeated the US women’s team 5-2.

If a team of boys going through early puberty can crush one of the best adult women’s soccer teams in the world, how can the inclusion of biological male athletes be anything but a disaster for the female athletes they compete against?

And this does not mean that the threat to women is not only a crooked scoreboard. Last December, a male player at a transgender hockey tournament suffered a concussion from a female opponent when he nearly collided with her near the bench.

Sauerbrunn is 37 years old, has won two world championships and is nearing the end of her career. It’s easy for her to write this because she’s earned her fame and fortune, and the likelihood of a male athlete coming to USWNT and displacing her before she’s age-displaced is relatively low.

But if lawmakers follow her advice, the risk to generations of girls after her could not be more catastrophic.
