Alex Murdo to be sentenced Friday after being found guilty of killing his wife and son

Disgraced South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdo, who was convicted of murdering his wife and son, will be sentenced Friday.

Murdo, 54, faces 30 years to life without parole for each murder charge when he is sentenced, which in South Carolina is usually given immediately after sentencing but can be delayed if the judge decides.

Judge Clifton Newman scheduled sentencing Friday morning at 9:30 am local time.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before finding Murdo guilty of two counts of murder and possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime at the end of a six-week trial.

With over 75 witnesses and nearly 800 pieces of evidence, the jury learned about loyal friends and clients, Murdo’s failed attempt to fake his own death in an insurance fraud scheme, a fatal boat crash involving his son, a housekeeper who died in a fall in Murdo’s house and the gruesome scene of the murder of Murdo’s wife and son.

“We can’t get them back, but we can get justice,” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson told reporters after the verdict. “It’s a good day in South Carolina. Today’s verdict proves that no one, no one, no matter who you are in society, can be above the law.”

Earlier Thursday, Murdo’s defense team presented its closing arguments, saying law enforcement was too quick to identify Murdo as the prime suspect in the murders.

Murdo’s lawyers will almost certainly appeal the conviction on the basis that the judge provided evidence of financial crimes that they believe were unrelated to the murders and were used by prosecutors to smear Murdo’s reputation.

In a separate case that has yet to go to trial, Murdo faces 99 separate charges related to alleged financial crimes.
