Aetion, FDA Partner for Real World Cancer Data

EtzionThe real-world healthcare data startup has announced a five-year research collaboration with the FDA’s Cancer Center of Excellence (OCE).

OCE will use the Evidence Platform Aetion to discover and analyze real-world data sources that can be used for research in cancer prevention, clinical care, diagnosis and treatment.

The collaboration will evaluate realistic endpoints, measure healthcare disparities, and evaluate methods of causal inference. The research will continue until 2027.

“We are proud to be partnering with the FDA Cancer Center of Excellence to conduct important research to use real-world data and help better serve vulnerable and underrepresented populations,” said Carolyn Magill, CEO of Aetion. “Our collaboration advances our mission of understanding which treatments work for which patients and brings us closer to achieving health equity among cancer patients.”

BIG TREND

Since its founding in 2013, the New York-based medical technology company has attracted a lot of investment.

In 2021, Aetion scored $110 million in Series C funding, bringing the company’s total fundraising to $212 million. The funding round comes less than a year after the company completed a $19 million Series B renewal round.

In 2019 Sanofi has merged its real data platform with Aetion’s Evidence Platform. Sanofi’s real-life data platform, DARWIN, provided de-identified patient data that was analyzed by the Evidence Platform Aetion to provide information on drug efficacy, safety and value.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Aetion partnered with a healthcare data platform. HealthVerity will launch tools to help biopharmaceutical companies and regulators find treatments for COVID-19.

In December, Aetion announced its FDA approval. The Office of Data Analytics and Research has extended its contract through 2023, originally signed in 2020, to study real data on medical responses to COVID-19. Aetion will expand its work to assess data standardization in the context of COVID-19.
