According to the report, Yonkers ranks among the happiest cities in the US.

Disneyland may be known as “The Happiest Place on Earth”, but apparently the happiest place in the New York area is… Yonkers?

That’s true, at least according to a report from personal finance website WalletHub, which surveyed 182 cities based on various measures of happiness. Yonkers was ranked the 18th happiest city in the United States, the highest ranking of any city in the tri-state area.

The city north of New York City was highly rated for the emotional and physical well-being of residents, ranking 17th overall nationwide. This indicator combines categories such as life expectancy and indicators of food insecurity, sleep, depression, suicide and sports. Yonkers was ranked 44th in community and environment, but much lower in income and employment (118th).

Jersey City was the only other metropolitan area to make it into the top 50 of WalletHub’s list, coming in at number 32. The five boroughs ranked 57th, ranking 16th in the community and environment rankings, which evaluates things like weather, free time, park space, and wedding and separation rates. New York City ranked 61st in emotional and physical well-being and 152nd (out of 182) in income and employment.

Other tri-state cities that made it to WalletHub’s list included Bridgeport, Connecticut at No. 68, and Newark, which was at No. 125.

Overall, the New York area had one element that was the best in the country: the lowest suicide rate. Newark, Jersey City, New York and Yonkers were in the top five in this category.

The first city on the list was Fremont, California, which was found to have the best emotional and physical well-being, as well as the best community and environment. Two other California cities, San Jose and San Francisco, also made it into the top five, coming in 2nd and 5th, respectively. Madison, Wisconsin and Overland Park, Kansas rounded out the top five.

While California led all states with three cities in the top ten, a WalletHub report found that the much smaller state also had two cities in the top tier. In Vermont, South Burlington and Burlington made the top ten.

As for the city with the lowest ranking, it is Detroit, Michigan, which ranked no more than 178th in any of the three categories. Also at the bottom of the list were Montgomery, Alabama; Cleveland, Ohio; Shreveport, Louisiana; and Huntington, West Virginia.
