A US postal worker, 71, was stabbed to death by a repeat offender while walking home in Oakland, California.

According to her family and local reports, on Wednesday in Oakland, California, a repeat offender stabbed to death a U.S. postal worker, just steps from her home, as she was returning from work on the night shift.

Dilma Spruill, 71, was walking home as usual around 00:30 a.m. after sorting mail at a post office and distribution center in West Oakland, her son Miles Spruill told KTVU FOX2.

“Three houses away,” said Miles Spruill. “She was almost home, but she won’t be coming home.”

According to her son, Dilma Spruill, who worked for the US Postal Service for 18 years, was stabbed multiple times and died at the scene.

Police have arrested a suspect, identified as 28-year-old Wilbert Winchester, in connection with a fatal stab wound.

Winchester, who had served three years on a previous conviction for elder abuse, allegedly stabbed another woman to death just two days before Dilma Spruill was killed, the network reported.

Prosecutors charged Winchester with Spruill’s murder and attempted murder in connection with the early stabbing.

Police have not determined a motive for any of the attacks.

According to a USPS spokesperson, Dilma Spruill worked as a mail carrier at the USPS Message Processing Center in Oakland, California.

A USPS spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that Dilma Spruill worked at the Oakland Mail Processing Center as a courier for almost 18 years.

“The United States Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee,” the USPS said in a statement. “We have lost a member of our postal family. Dilma radiated energy, joy and brought light to all who had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her. Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with her family and her colleagues.
