A thrift store in North Texas, a music CD, and the new mystery of 59-year-old John F. Kennedy.

“How this could end up in a small town thrift store fascinates me,” George Rebeles said of the original Polaroid photo he found.

FERRIS, Texas. A resident of Ferris, Texas, made an unusual discovery, perhaps in one of the most unusual places. Now he asks if a nearly 60-year-old photo of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas could have any investigative or even monetary value.

“I was shocked. I was shocked,” said George Rebeles from his home in Ferris. And that’s putting it mildly.

His shock came from a trip to the Souls Harbor thrift store in downtown Ferris. He worked his way through a collection of used furniture, appliances, and knick-knacks to get to a stack of music CDs.

Bachman Turner’s anthology Overdrive was a 1970s treasure he found.

“Oh yeah, they’re consistently good,” he said of the Canadian rockers whose hits like “Taking Care of Business” and “Let it Ride” span generations.

But maybe a month later he opened it.

“It wasn’t until I turned it over that I noticed what it was.”

The original black and white Polaroid photo was inside the CD packaging with the date 11-22-63 handwritten on the back. It was a picture of JFK’s motorcade on that fateful day.

“Of course, I knew right away that it was an unpublished photo. So I was excited,” Rebeles said. “It just seemed odd to me to find it in a CD case.”

“The timeline and its correspondence to the assassination of the president,” he said, answering one of the many questions he had. “And the way it could end up in a small town thrift store fascinates me.”

Charming and someone else. Another Farris. This time Farris with the letter “A”.

Farris Rookstool, III, former FBI agent and JFK historian in charge of the bronze plaques and lighthouse at the Dallas Love Field airstrip. This is where Lyndon Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One after the assassination.

“To me, this is Dallas’ most historic landmark,” Rookstool said.

But as for the historical picture of the Rebel, his news was not promising.

“It’s sort of an interpretation of an antiques road show,” he said, looking at a larger copy of the photo on his iPad.

“The assessment is that although you have a beautiful photograph, it is a good keepsake, it is a good family heirloom. It means something to someone in someone’s family. I would say if anyone thinks this has a high monetary value brace yourself or be disappointed,” he said.

Rookstool said the photo appears to have been taken as JFK’s motorcade left Love Field that day, turning left onto Mockingbird Lane and heading towards Highland Park. In the distance, he sees a distinctive building that looks like the Old Executive Inn.

Rookstul also said that the passenger door appears to be tightly closed. He said that near Loma Alto and Lemmon Kennedy offered to stop the car and shake hands with people in the crowd. Rookstool said Gov. John Connally, who sat in front of Kennedy, briefly opened the door only to close it again when the plan to stop the motorcade was cancelled. The photographs show that the rest of the route the door is slightly ajar.

Everyone in the car is also looking away from the photographer, which Ruxtul says can also reduce his value.

“Probably intrinsic value, sure, but as far as monetary value, I have no idea,” Rebels said.

He said he had not yet decided whether to keep the photo for himself or offer it for sale to a collector. But he still would like to know who took the picture and how it ended up in a CD case in a small town shoplifting shop.

“I’m not a big fan of conspiracies or anything like that, but sometimes things don’t quite add up,” Rebels said.

This may add to another grainy lingering issue almost 60 years later.

“I just hope someone looks at this and says, you know what, it’s pretty nice to have something from history to see something that no one has seen in probably 60 years,” Rukstul added.
