A Texas congressman helps free an imprisoned Afghan soldier who fought alongside US troops during the war.

Every day at KPRC 2, we strive to tell stories that will benefit you, our viewers and readers.

That was the case last month when a man asked us for help regarding his brother, who was seeking asylum from the Taliban but ended up behind bars in Texas despite helping the US in the war.

This man is now free after what has been described as a grueling four months behind bars.

You may remember Sami Safi from the December story when he desperately asked for the release of his brother Abdul Wasi Safi.

“People like my brother are suffering right now,” Sami said.

Abdul Wasi was left behind when the US withdrew from Afghanistan. He later fled persecution from the remaining Taliban in Afghanistan, but was detained after crossing the Texas-Mexico border with the United States in the hope of asylum.

After the KPRC contacted Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee, she immediately took action. She says writing a letter to the White House asking for the release of Abdul Wasi Safi was only part of the effort.

“I knew that I needed to be given an aid package to fight for his life, essentially to reunite with his brother,” she said. “I pointed out that this is a national issue. It’s not something we want to ignore.”

It worked.

On Wednesday, the congresswoman announced that all government orders were canceled and Abdul Wasi Safi would be released.

“I stressed that America must keep its promise,” she said.

Sami Safi applauded the congresswoman and made the following statement to us.

“Words cannot describe my sincere gratitude for all your support in my brother’s cause. I sincerely believe that without your help nothing would have been possible. Your approach to the SJL truly did everything that needed to be done to get justice for my brother who sacrificed himself and his family’s safety to serve this nation’s military. And thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

We’re so glad we could be a part of it.

On Friday, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee will hold a press conference with Sami and Abdul Wasi when they reunite and tell their story.

We will have a report tomorrow evening.
