Russian pranksters posing as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko managed to reach Angela Merkel by phone to discuss developments in Ukraine and Belarus, although the former German chancellor looked wary during the conversation.

Merkel’s office said on Monday that the former leader of Germany received a phone call on January 12 from someone who introduced himself as Poroshenko. The conversation was attended by a German-Ukrainian translator of the language service of the German Foreign Ministry.

In an emailed statement, the office said Merkel subsequently informed the ministry of “the impression she made on the caller during the call,” but did not elaborate on what it was.

Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, known as Vovan and Lexus, published excerpts from the conversation on their Telegram channel. The pair have previously embarrassed European politicians, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish President Andrzej Duda and then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as Elton John and Prince Harry, with similar false calls.

In the recording, Merkel says — as she has done publicly before — that the much-maligned Minsk peace accords have bought Ukraine precious time. Merkel and former French President Francois Hollande brokered a peace deal with Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2015. She also criticizes repression in autocratic Belarus.
