A rare video of the sinking of the Titanic in 1986 has been published

The release of the footage is to coincide with the release on February 10, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the remastered version of the Oscar-winning film Titanic.

FALMUTH, Massachusetts. A rare and in some cases never before publicly released video of a 1986 dive through the wreckage of the Titanic was released Wednesday by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

Over 80 minutes of footage on the WHOI YouTube channel chronicles some of the remarkable accomplishments of the Robert Ballard-led dive, which marked the first time the human eye has seen a giant ocean liner since it hit an iceberg and sank in the frigid North Atlantic. in April 1912. About 1,500 people died on the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York.

A team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts, in partnership with the French oceanographic research organization Institut français de recherche pour l’exploitation de la mer, discovered the ship’s final resting place at a depth of 12,400 feet (3,780 meters) on September 3rd. 1, 1985 using a towed underwater camera.

Nine months later, the WHOI team returned to the scene in the famous three-seat Alvin research submersible and the Jason Jr. remotely operated research submersible, which took iconic images of the ship’s interior.

The release of the footage is to coincide with the release on February 10, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the remastered version of the Oscar-winning film Titanic.
