A 71-year-old woman who received a $900 water bill finally got help after the KHOU 11 report.

HOUSTON. Annette Harrison, 71, contacted the city of Houston for several weeks about a water leak in her home that she said was not her fault.

KHOU 11 shared their story Tuesday night and it caught the attention of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“After I listened to the story and saw the solid waste truck based on the video reported by KHOU, I called my directors and said we need to look at it and fix it,” Turner said.

On Wednesday morning, he ordered city crews to Harrison’s home, who fixed the problem.

The leak caused Harrison’s water bill to jump from $40 to over $900. When she couldn’t pay her bill, the city turned off her water.

Since she couldn’t take a shower, use the bath, wash the dishes, and do many other things, she left.

“I got emotional because it didn’t seem to matter,” she said. And the only way I knew I could get some attention, maybe some attention, was to call (KHOU),” Harrison said.

KHOU 11 reporter Ugochi Iloka was there when the water was turned back on for the first time in nearly five days at Harrison’s house.

“Look at that, look at all those looks. It works,” she said. “Mayor Turner, the water is on, but I’ll let you know if anything goes wrong, I might annoy you, but I’ll call you.”

Harrison says she’s grateful to have her story shared on television.

“I want to thank Channel 11 KHOU for coming up to me and paying attention to what I had to say and taking me seriously,” she said.

The city of Houston said they would return Harrison’s water bill to his regular amount.
