A 16-year-old teenager was killed, a 17-year-old was wounded after a shooting in Fort Worth Wataburger.

FORT WORTH, TX (CBSDFW.COM) – A 16-year-old boy has died and a 17-year-old girl is in critical condition following a shooting at a Whataburger restaurant located on the corner of West Berry Street and McCarth Avenue in Fort Worth.

The shooting happened after 4:00 pm on Friday. Police believe the shooter, who is still at large, knew the victims from school. It is not known which school they attend.

The location of the shooting is near Easter High School, which Fort Worth ISD said happened after the school was fired. However, the school was immediately closed to the remaining students and staff.

The victims were taken to a local hospital, where the boy died and the girl remains in critical condition.

Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said the incident began as a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical altercation and then tragically escalated into a shooting.

“This is another example of senseless tragic violence that should never have happened,” Noakes said. “And, unfortunately, there are very young people involved right here in the city of Fort Worth. We’re going to do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.”

Noakes said he believes there is only one suspect, but police are working to confirm the total number involved.

“The shooter needs to know that justice will be done,” Noakes said. “We will do our job in partnership with the community to make sure they are brought to justice. And I tell the shooter, give up. You’ve made a serious mistake. Give up and don’t make things worse. “

He continued to ask parents to be involved in their children’s lives, to find out if there were problems and to avoid conflicts.

“If your child has a weapon, please contact us for help, contact someone to talk to this child,” he said. “Put away the guns, families need to be involved. Communities must be involved. We need to be involved to really stop this crime, all of us.”

If anyone has information about the incident, please call the Fort Worth Police Department at 817-392-4330.
