A 12-year-old had an emergency 9-hour brain surgery while on vacation in Orlando.

ORLANDO, Florida. – A 12-year-old boy from Seattle underwent emergency nine-hour brain surgery while on vacation in Orlando, according to Orlando Health.

In a press release, an Orlando Health spokesperson said the boy, Anish Srivastava, suffered from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a high-risk plexus of blood vessels in the brain.

Srivastava was originally scheduled for surgery in January in his hometown of Seattle to remove the disease, but in December his family traveled to Orlando ahead of the operation, a press release reveals.

According to the hospital, an AVM ruptured while on vacation, causing a massive cerebral hemorrhage, severe pain, and loss of sensation on one side of Srivastava’s body.

Srivastava was taken to Orlando Health’s Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, where neurosurgeons then performed a nine-hour brain operation to save his life, Orlando Health reported.

“Anish’s surgery was a long one, but our goal was to keep him safe by taking the strain off his brain and removing the complex brain AVM and associated aneurysm,” Samer Elbabaa, head of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department, said. “Most importantly, the immediate risk of another rupture of this AVM has been reduced to 0%.

According to Orlando Health, Srivastava remained in the hospital in critical condition for several weeks, eventually regaining some of his strength, making short sentences, smiling and even laughing.

Srivastava was later allowed to return to his home state and flew back to Seattle on a medical flight earlier this month, a hospital spokesman said.

“I am very happy to be at home with my family and our close friends to celebrate Anish’s birthday and life,” said Radhika Srivastava, the boy’s mother. “The worst is over and we’re going to celebrate every milestone.”
