9-year-old New York girl dies in Brooklyn fire

The 9-year-old, described by loved ones as a “boost of energy”, died Friday after a fire at her Brownsville home, her family and authorities said.

A three-alarm fire broke out at her family’s three-story home on Howard Avenue in Brownsville just before 5:30 a.m., according to the FDNY.

Little Payton Thompson was found unconscious in a home by rescuers during the third flood and taken to Brookdale Hospital, but she could not be saved, according to police and her family.

“We remember Payton as loving, energetic, full of energy,” Drellj Melton wrote in an online fundraiser for the family to help pay for the funeral.

“She shared her light with everyone she came into contact with. Payton loved jewelry, was obsessed with her little sister Lauryn, and praised the lord without hesitation.”

Her uncle, Joseph Thompson, told WABC-TV that “smoke enveloped her body, surrounded her heart, and that’s why she didn’t survive.”

The station said ten family members were sleeping inside when the fire started.

Thompson said his family has deep roots in the church. “My mother is the pastor of the church, she is the pastor, and I am the assistant pastor, it is called the Faith Deliverance Tabernacle,” Thompson told the radio station.

The cause of the fire was investigated Friday night, but FDNY Deputy Chief James Carney called it “rapid.”

“When we arrived, there was a big fire on the second floor,” he said.

FDNY officials said about 140 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was brought under control shortly before 7:30 a.m.

One firefighter also received minor injuries as a result of the fire.
