2023 Windcrest Light-Up sees record-breaking participation

Windcrest, Texas — The beloved tradition of decorating homes with dazzling holiday lights has reached new heights this year in the city of Windcrest. As the anticipated busiest night of the season approached, residents and visitors were in for a treat with the 2023 Windcrest Light-Up, which might have made history. This year’s theme, inspired by the classic poem “Twas The Night Before Christmas,” brought a whole new level of magic to the city.

Mayor Dan Reese expressed his excitement, stating, “There’s a whole lot of wow’s, there’s a whole lot of joy.” The efforts put into the light displays were truly remarkable, with sugar plum fairies dancing to the sound of jingle bells and thousands of twinkling lights igniting joy in every blink. Windcrest has solidified its reputation as the go-to destination for Christmas lights in South Texas. The city was even named the number one place for Christmas lights by the popular application, Yelp.

The winners of the highly competitive “Light Up” competition were announced this week, and the level of creativity and dedication displayed by the participants was outstanding. Mayor Reese noted that this year saw a significant increase in entries compared to previous years. One particular cul de sac showcased excerpts from “Twas The Night Before Christmas” in each yard, impressing both the judges and the community. The amount of time and effort put into these elaborate displays was truly immense.

Among the participants, the home of John and Brenda Wilson stood out as a crowd favorite. The couple had earned national recognition in 2021 for their extravagant Christmas light display, and this year, they surprised everyone with a yard sign instead. The sign proudly proclaimed their victory in the Great Christmas Light Fight of 2021, accompanied by the humorous message, “NOW WE’RE TIRED!” John and Brenda, who typically start decorating as early as July, humorously acknowledged the physical challenges they face as they grow older. Nevertheless, they assured their fans that they would continue to bring joy to the neighborhood, even if on a slightly smaller scale.

As dusk fell, cars began rolling through the Windcrest neighborhood, filled with families eager to experience the magic of the holiday lights. Archie Archambault from Universal City described it as a favorite holiday tradition, saying, “When you’re together with your kids seeing lights, we got hot chocolate going in the back, Christmas music going, there’s nothing better during Christmas time. It gives you that warm feeling!” Erica Arredondo, who also visited Windcrest with her family, shared the excitement of her daughter, who insisted on making the trip to see the lights again this year.

In addition to the enchanting home displays, a new LED display on the city’s water tower, known as “the biggest candle in the State of Texas,” added another element of awe to the Windcrest Light-Up. The mayor revealed that the light designs on the water tower will change throughout the year, offering a continuous visual delight for residents and visitors alike. Windcrest has extended the Christmas lights spectacle until January 31, 2024, allowing ample time for everyone to enjoy the magic.

For those planning to attend, it is recommended to visit early and on weekdays to avoid the expected high traffic.
