2 more migrant boats land in Florida Keys amid crisis; another landing at Fort Lauderdale Beach

DENMARK BEACH, Florida. (WSVN) — More migrant boats have been spotted off the coast of Key Largo and Key Colony Beach after hundreds of migrants landed on the shores of the Florida Keys last week.

On Tuesday morning, a group of about 20 people landed near Marathon.

This event is the latest in a relentless stream of migrants risking everything to reach South Florida.

On Monday, Florida State workers set up a base camp as directed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The new rule is meant to tap government resources to help deal with the crisis in the Keys.

“Our primary concern is to protect the people of Florida and identify these vessels before they arrive in Florida,” said Florida Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie.

Senator Marco Rubio aboard a US Coast Guard flight on Tuesday assesses what more the federal government can do.

The effort also includes cleaning up derelict makeshift boats strewn across the straits that threaten marine life and cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars.

“More than 300 mufflers, skimmers and commoners were estimated to be leaking oil and hydraulic fluid,” Guthrie said. “We’re going to go over there and clean up this junk.”

DeSantis spoke publicly for the first time since he announced and issued the executive order, but did not raise the issue.

Late on Tuesday evening, another landing of migrants took place, this time on the beach of Fort Lauderdale.
