Two people are dead in what investigators say is a murder-suicide shooting Tuesday inside the building that houses the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, authorities say.

A Dallas police spokesman told NBC 5 that officers were responding to reports of an active shooter shortly before 5 p.m. at the Dallas County Medical Examiner building located along the 2300 block of North Stemmons Freeway.

About 30 minutes later, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins told reporters outside the building that it appeared an armed person fatally shot someone before taking their own life.

There was no longer a threat to the public, Jenkins said.

Officers were searching the building and neighboring Dallas County Health and Human Services building as a precaution, Jenkins said. Both buildings had been evacuated.

The names of the deceased will be released after their families are notified, Jenkins said. He added that grief counselors will be provided to staff who worked there.

No further information was immediately available.
