17-year-old was driving in the wrong direction after leading officers chased him on Southwest Highway: HPD

HOUSTON — A 17-year-old driver is in custody after the teen gave chase on the Southwest Highway on Tuesday, Houston Police Department officers said.

Police said the pursuit began on Park Row Drive shortly before 1 a.m. after officers found a stolen pickup truck with California license plates at a nearby gas station on Country Creek Drive.

The officers said that when they tried to approach the vehicle, the suspect drove away. The chase lasted approximately 30 minutes and reached speeds of up to 90 mph before the teenager crashed into a parked car on Briarhurst, south of Westheimer, investigators said.

According to police, the teenager repeatedly drove the car in the wrong direction, trying to get away from the police.

Officers said the suspect turned on Highway 59 near Newcastle and began heading south on the northern lanes, then turned onto the transfer ramp in the wrong direction and drove north on the southern lanes of 610.

According to law enforcement officers, the driver and three other passengers of the car were detained. The driver is also expected to be charged.

Police said no one was hurt during the chase.
