‘You’re a real superhero’: Young Dallas brothers share life-saving Valentine’s Day gift

When 13-year-old Preston Pipkins was diagnosed with cancer, finding a bone marrow donor on the registry was not easy. So, his 7-year-old brother Cameron stepped up.

DALLAS. Two boys prove that their brotherly bond can inspire the kind of love that can be life-changing.

13-year-old Preston Pipkins and his 7-year-old brother Cameron spent Valentine’s Day in surgery at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. Preston needed a bone marrow transplant. His younger brother was his donor.

“You are transferring the marrow from your body to my body because my marrow is corrupted. He has cancer, right? You don’t,” Preston discusses in a video with Cameron that his mom posted on social media.

In September 2022, the teenager was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The chemotherapy courses were difficult for the boy. His family also had a hard time.

“Challenge isn’t even the right word,” explained the boys’ mom, Rachel Pipkins.

Family members said that Preston is a strong boy. However, little Cameron’s aspiration to become a bone marrow donor for his older brother speaks volumes.

“You saved me,” Preston told his brother from his hospital bed.

Preston and Cameron are typical brothers. They play together. Sometimes they may fight. Cameron said he just wanted his brother to get better.

“I don’t like that he is in the hospital. And he has to take medication every day,” Cameron shared.

Finding a bone marrow donor was not easy.

“We looked at the roster and Preston didn’t have the right match. So Cameron is his only option,” said Rachel Pipkins.

The boys braced themselves for a life-saving option that brought them closer.

“You are a real superhero,” said Preston Cameron.

The boys successfully completed a bone marrow transplant on Valentine’s Day.

So, on a day when many people think of love, the boys vividly showed their love for each other.

Cameron also proved that all superheroes don’t wear capes.

Close friends, family and community members have rallied around the Pipkins family since they learned of Preston’s illness.

Supporters have set up a website to help the family with their immediate needs during Preston’s treatment and recovery.
