Wynnewood Village at Oak Cliff adds new stores, including Target

The historic Wynnewood Village mall in Oak Cliff is undergoing a transformation that will include renovations and new store openings.

The newest and largest to date will be Target, which will appear in the next two years.

Wynnewood Village has been a merchant ship in Oak Cliff since 1949.

“I remember bringing my children here. It was a long time ago,” recalls Brenda Walker. “My eldest son is in his 40s. Yes, I remember bringing all my children and some of their friends here.”

Wynnewood was the first outdoor mall in Dallas.

“There are really generational memories of shopping here with grandparents, getting a first haircut, or learning to drive in the back parking lot,” said Brett Milke, vice president of refurbishment at Brixmor Property Group.

After years of decline and change of ownership, Wynnewood is making a comeback.

In two years, a 111,000-square-foot Target store will open there.

“Really anchors the center and gives the local community a good place to shop for daily needs and the injured,” Milke added.

“I think Target would be a good idea,” buyer Pedro Ferrer said.

“Oh yes yes. Every day. We come here every day,” added Ferrer.

Milke and Brixmor Property Group opened LA Fitness in Wynnwood with help from the city in 2019.

“It’s been a real success story and I think we’re just ready to use it with Target and, you know, with any future investment we can add,” Milke said.

Brickmore has led Wynnwood’s redevelopment through several rough waters, but there is now new construction, houses and apartments in Wynnwood and South Gate Park, just a few blocks away.

“South Dallas has a really big momentum. We are very happy to be a part of this,” Milke said. “We are actively partnering with Gateway Park and many other projects in the area, just so you know the tide will lift all the boats.”

They hope to keep Wynnewood as a retail ship in Oak Cliff.

“It’s really the center of the community and we try to keep it that way,” Milke said.
