Work to remove dead fish washed up on Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers Beach, Florida. City workers work daily on Fort Myers Beach, removing dead fish that have begun to wash out.

Last week, the city’s environmental services manager began working with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to get official approval for heavier fish removal equipment.

According to a press release, this approval was received on Monday, February 27, and the city is using the Lee County facility effective Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

On Monday last week, the Lee County Department of Health reported that the Gulf waters around Lynn Hall Memorial Park near Times Square in Fort Myers Beach were tested and detected a Red Tide “alert level”.

The Department of Health also has recommendations that have been in effect since Hurricane Ian about entering the bay or any other body of water due to the level of debris that was released into the water after the storm.
