Woman’s daughter mourns tragic alligator incident in Pinellas County

In a tragic incident that has left a family in shock and disbelief, a loved one was found dead after an encounter with an alligator in Pinellas County, Florida. The profound emotions of grief and loss are overwhelming, but the memory of Sabrina Peckham persists.

Breauna Dorris, Peckham’s daughter, describes the mix of emotions, saying, “Sometimes it’s just like you don’t remember at all that she’s not with us, and then I think that she’s going to walk through the door any second, and then you remember and then all of it comes back.” The pain of loss is palpable for the family as they struggle to comprehend the tragedy.

On Friday, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call near 134th Avenue North and 121st Street North in Largo. Collaborating with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, deputies conducted an investigation that led to the identification and humane killing of a 13-foot alligator that was subsequently removed from the water.

During the operation, law enforcement officials also recovered human remains from the water, later confirmed to be those of 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham. The medical examiner’s office is still in the process of determining the exact cause and manner of her death, leaving the family with unanswered questions.

Dorris, reflecting on the proximity of her mother’s residence to the incident, shares her prayers and hopes, saying, “Me knowing that she was staying 50 feet from where it happened, I prayed, I hope it’s not her, I hope it’s not her. Later that evening, law enforcement arrived at my door and pretty much told me that it was her and she was gone.” Peckham had been facing homelessness and was living in close proximity to the area where the tragic event occurred. Despite her circumstances, she was known for her kindness and selflessness.

The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering their support and condolences. A memorial has been created near the site in honor of Peckham, with people who never knew her leaving flowers as a tribute. Dorris expresses her gratitude for the outpouring of support, saying, “I’m sure my mother is just gleaming knowing that even one person cared about her, let alone thousands.”

To help cover funeral expenses, the family has set up a fundraising campaign. Additionally, a candlelight vigil is planned for Friday at 6 p.m. at the bridge located at 134th Avenue and 121st Street to commemorate Peckham’s life. Dorris acknowledges the significance of the community’s support, stating, “My mother was not cared about by many, but to know that in times like this where we need our little community that people are coming out showing their support, donating, praying, sending kind words. It’s all that I could ask for in a time like this, honestly.”

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife in certain areas and the importance of safety measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The community mourns the loss of Sabrina Peckham, a woman who touched the lives of those around her with her kindness and compassion.
