Woman Shirley charged with attempted murder after she allegedly ran a car over a teenager

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced Monday, Feb. 6, that 35-year-old Jennifer Nelson of Shirley was charged with attempted murder in an incident in 2022 when she allegedly ran over a 15-year-old boy she believed that robbed her own son.
“This defendant, an adult, allegedly thought she could take justice into her own hands, and in the process tried to kill a 15-year-old teenager,” Tierney said. “This defendant’s incredibly misguided attempt to avenge the alleged persecution of her own child is no excuse.”
Suffolk County Police arrested Nelson after they said she intentionally hit a teenager with her 2020 Honda passport on Friday, October 7, 2022.
Nelson was confronted by a group of teenagers, believed to be armed with a small baseball bat and a knife, in the parking lot of Dunkin’ Donuts, located across from William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach, about her son’s alleged mugger earlier in the day. ; One of the teenagers paid to cross the road to the Manhattan Bagel parking lot when Nelson crossed the street in her car and hit him with it, officials said.
Police say Nelson fled the scene after the incident, but was arrested the day after the investigation.
The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Nelson was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of the incident unacknowledged, resulting in serious bodily injury. She was released on bail and is due to appear before the court again on 21 March.
A criminal case is an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
