Woman and two men stuck in gaping hole in Long Island lawn

A woman in her 70s and two men in their 60s were somehow stuck in a gaping hole in their front yard on Long Island on Thursday, authorities said.

Suffolk County police say they first contacted a house at Huntington station just after 6 a.m. to report a woman stuck in a hole in the ground. When they arrived, they found her and two men in the hole.

The hole was about six feet deep and six feet wide—and right in the yard of the single-family home, which Redfin says is located on a 6,970-square-foot lot on West 10th Street.

Police did not say the trio told them about how they ended up in the pit or when. A passer-by (fortunately, one of them was outside) helped the officer to reach out and pull one of the three to safety, and the second officer to take the ladder from a neighbor. The two people who were stuck took advantage of this to get out.

The woman and one of the men were taken to the hospital for examination, police said. The other man was not hurt.

Police say a Huntington building inspector has been called to assess the property and determine the cause of the hole. It is unclear if authorities believe this may have been due to the weather. Heavy rain fell in parts of Long Island on Thursday afternoon and partly in the late evening hours. The investigation is ongoing.
