Winter Park’s Underground Power Grid Project Achieves Significant Milestone

Winter Park, Florida – In a momentous achievement for Winter Park Electric Utility, the city’s electric infrastructure fortification project has reached a significant milestone, as announced on Wednesday. According to the utility, nearly 75% of the city’s electric lines are now located underground, indicating substantial progress in this decades-long endeavor.

Although pandemic-related delays have caused setbacks, Utility Director Dan D’Alessandro expressed optimism that the project will be completed by 2030. Despite the challenges, D’Alessandro emphasized the gratification and immediate benefits of this vital undertaking, stating, “It is hard work, but it’s rewarding work because the benefit is obvious and immediate. It’s not over. We are done with about 80% of the city, which means 30% of people still need some work done.”

Currently, 95 miles out of the 130 miles included in the project have been successfully completed. Dedicated crews are averaging approximately 8 miles of progress each year.

Recalling her past encounters with power outages due to inclement weather, Ackerman shared, “I grew up in the area. I live in the area now. I work here, and I am so excited to have it. I remember growing up, every time it rained, the electricity and power went out.” She further revealed the inconveniences caused by these outages, such as the loss of perishable groceries and the inability to work from home without a backup generator.
