  • The Jersey City Police Department conducted a welfare check on Van Horn Street on Tuesday in connection with a missing person’s report, Hudson County Attorney Esther Suarez said.
  • According to Suarez, during the investigation, the homicide unit found a shallow grave near Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny, where the body of a woman was found.
  • According to prosecutors, the death was ruled a homicide. The victim is Luz Hernandez and an arrest was made in connection with the investigation.

Law enforcement announced the arrest of a 33-year-old New Jersey kindergarten teacher who was allegedly beaten and strangled to death before her body was found in a shallow grave.

The Hudson County Attorney’s Office said in a tweet early Friday that the arrest was made “in connection with an investigation into the death of Luz Hernandez.” While no charges, identities, or any additional information were provided, prosecutors said “something more is coming.”

The announcement comes just hours after prosecutors shared the results of an autopsy on Hernandez, who went missing earlier this week. The beloved teacher was found to have died from blunt force and neck compression, prosecutors said Thursday, confirming the case had moved from a missing persons investigation to a murder investigation.

Authorities are investigating the death of a missing Jersey City woman whose body was found in a shallow grave in Kearney, according to local prosecutors. This is reported by NBC New York correspondent Ida Segal.

The autopsy also confirmed Hernandez’s identity, which had been tentatively confirmed by the coroner. The case was opened on Monday, when a missing person’s report was filed. Hernandez didn’t show up for work that day, causing her family, already panicked when they didn’t hear from her over the weekend, to call the police.

On Tuesday, Jersey City police conducted a welfare check at Hernandez’s home on Van Horn Street. It’s unclear what they found, but prosecutors said it was enough for the police to contact their office for help.

During the investigation, homicide detectives discovered a shallow grave near Central Avenue and Third Street, an outlying area of neighboring Kearney. Hernandez’s body was soon discovered.

The mother of three children died on the spot. Hernandez’s family was “heartbroken” by the news.

“We can’t live without her, I will never fill this void,” her sister Jenny Taveras said in Spanish. She also said that she wants justice for her sister.

“She was a really good mother. She was kind, my God. She was a wonderful person. We will miss her so much. I can’t say, it’s unbelievable,” cousin Yajaira Germosen said.

Hernandez was last seen on Saturday when she and her children went to visit relatives. This was the last time her children saw her alive, as they spent Sunday with their father.

“He went to church with the kids like nothing happened,” Germosen said.

The school where she taught was closed for a day on Wednesday so that those who knew her could mourn. A memorial grew up on the steps of the popular teacher’s house, flooded with candles, balloons and posters. Hernandez’s six-year-old student cried as she left a card that said “I love you”.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Hudson County Attorney’s Office at 201-915-1345 or submit a review online here.
