HOUSTON. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to deliver acceptance speech at Rice University in 2023.

Members of the student committee nominated Jean-Pierre to speak at the undergraduate admissions ceremony scheduled for May 6 at Rice Stadium.

All graduates of 2023 are invited to the ceremony along with their families.

Who is Karine Jean-Pierre?

Jean-Pierre is a longtime adviser to President Joe Biden. She is the first black woman, the first lesbian, and the first immigrant to serve as a press secretary.

Jean-Pierre was born to Haitian parents in Martinique before moving with his family to New York at the age of 5. She graduated from Columbia University and began her career in American politics as a grassroots activist, according to Rice’s representatives.

Jean-Pierre has served in various leadership positions in communications and politics, including in the administration of former President Barack Obama and Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign. Prior to joining the Biden campaign in 2020, she served as director of communications for MoveOn and as a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC.

Jean-Pierre served as regional political director for the White House Office of Political Affairs during the Obama administration and was deputy director for battlefield states during Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.

“Like many of you, Karin has overcome barriers to get where she is today,” Rice University President Reginald DeRoches said in a message to the Rice community. “This part of her story especially attracted me and the members of the student committee who nominated her as a speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony.”

The exact date for the graduation ceremony on May 6, where Jean-Pierre will deliver a speech, will be announced at a later date.
