While some establishments will close their doors in observance of the holiday, plenty of options remain available for those in need.
This federal holiday, which falls on Monday, May 29th, typically heralds an extended weekend filled with patriotic parades and solemn remembrance services. At the same time, it represents the unofficial start of the much-anticipated summer season, leading to a slew of friendly barbecues, peaceful beach outings, and cherished family gatherings.
For those who plan to venture out on Memorial Day, a range of establishments will keep their doors open. However, specific hours of operation may differ from one location to another, highlighting the importance of checking the holiday hours at your nearest outlet.
Well-known national grocery chains like Starbucks, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell are among the establishments that will remain operational on Memorial Day. However, it is essential to bear in mind that individual franchise locations, particularly those privately owned, may decide to observe the holiday.
When it comes to big-box retail giants, Target and Walmart have both confirmed their commitment to providing services to customers on Memorial Day. In addition, Walgreens will continue to operate during its regular business hours across its numerous locations.
However, the warehouse club giant Costco will not open its doors on May 29th. The retailer usually closes its warehouses on seven specific holidays, including Memorial Day.
As for banking services, major institutions such as Chase and Wells Fargo, among others, will not open on Memorial Day due to their affiliation with the Federal Reserve. As a federal agency, the Federal Reserve observes the holiday, and this affects the functioning of most banks. Nevertheless, customers can continue to access online banking services and ATMs, albeit with limited access to live representatives.
Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the final Monday in May, possesses a rich history. Previously known as Decoration Day, the origins of this revered holiday can be traced back to the period following the Civil War. Until 1968, May 30th was recognized as Memorial Day, but the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, passed by Congress that year, moved the date to the last Monday in May, formalizing it as a federal holiday.
In contrast to Memorial Day, Veterans Day, which will be observed on Saturday, November 11, 2023, pays homage to all military veterans in the nation, highlighting the difference between the two observances. While the former solemnly honors the fallen, the latter acknowledges the service of all veterans.
