What we know about the fatal shooting near Atlantic Station

On Wednesday, the APD provided an update on the search for the suspect, as well as more information on who was shot.

ATLANTA — Atlanta police released video of a group of teenagers allegedly involved in the fatal shooting near Atlantic Station on Saturday, when 12 and 15-year-olds were killed. A week later, two arrests were announced.

What does the observation show?

Atlanta police said they were looking for four prime suspects in the fatal murder. Their homicide detectives released CCTV footage showing the suspects walking with a group of teenagers down 17th Street prior to the Nov. 26 shooting. The department also has footage of the group leaving on the MARTA train after the shooting.

“The people I’m going to point out in this video are responsible for the entire shooting,” investigator Jarion Shepard said.

Investigators said that the group boarded the train and dispersed in different directions around the city. Atlanta police said there was a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooters.

Who are the suspects under arrest?

Atlanta police made three arrests in connection with a shooting that killed two children and injured four others near Atlantic Station.

On Wednesday, the APD said they had arrested a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old in the case and that they would be charged with murder. The police did not identify the two.

They added that one of the teens was detained in New York and that both are in the Atlanta public school system. They were both described as the shooters in the November 27 incident.

In addition, on December 12, a third arrest was announced. A 16-year-old teenager from Clayton County was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.

A fourth suspect, Derodney Russell, was arrested on Sunday, March 5 by Clayton County sheriff’s deputies. He was the first adult arrested in connection with the deadly November shooting. He is now in custody at the Clayton County Jail and charged with murder.

Who were the victims?

Two children were shot dead in the shootout. On Saturday evening, 12-year-old Zion Charles died in the incident. The second victim, 15-year-old Cameron Jackson, was initially in critical condition after the shooting. Four more were injured.

Zion’s mother, Dirika Charles, made emotional remarks to the Atlanta City Council Public Safety Committee earlier this week, describing her attempts to keep her son from dangerous behavior. She said he was involved in car-breaking gangs, an increasingly common form of street crime in Atlanta.

“I tried, all of you. I called the police almost 30 times in the last two years and they told me there was nothing they could do. from the street,” said Dirika.

Jackson’s family described him as a teenager who loves science, animals, cooking, and off-road motorcycle riding. He has also been boxing since the age of 9.

More about the case

Police initially said the gunfight was due to the two groups being initially escorted out of Atlantic Station due to unruly behavior and curfew violations at the compound. But the APD later confirmed that they believed the shooting was gang-related.

Charles’ family also stated that they did not believe he was part of the gang. There were two arrests in the case. The APD announced that the 15 and 16 year olds are in custody.
