Ways to help or get help during cold snap in North Texas

Dangerously cold temperatures have arrived in North Texas. Here are ways you can get help or receive it.

DALLAS — The arctic blast has hit North Texas, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills to the area.

From donating time and/or money to warming shelters, there are ways to help those who need it the most during this cold snap in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Here are also ways to receive help.

Warming centers

Warming shelters will be open across North Texas to keep people out of the cold. 

About 360 cots have been set up at the former Austin Street Shelter, which is one of several sites the city of Dallas and its partners are opening during the extreme cold.

City of Fort Worth Libraries and Community Centers can be used as warming stations during normal business hours, according to the Fort Worth Office of Emergency Management.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army said it’s providing cold weather relief during this time through warming centers and donations.

In Dallas County, the Carr P. Collins Social Service Center will open for inclement weather shelter on Wednesday, December 21 or Thursday, December 22, depending on the forecast.

In Collin County, the Plano Corps Community Center is open for inclement weather shelter. The McKinney Corps Community Center will open for inclement weather shelter on Saturday, December 24. 

In Tarrant County, the Arlington Corps Community Center will open for inclement weather shelter on Friday, December 23. The J.E. & L.E. Mabee Social Service Center is on standby and prepared to serve families in the area as the need arises.

In Denton County, the Lewisville Corps Community Center is supplying staff, resources, and volunteers to the Relevant Life Church, which is the designated overnight cold weather shelter site for the area.

Meals on Wheels

The Visiting Nurses Association is asking for volunteers to help on Friday, Dec. 23. The organization said there are about 70 routes open due to cancellations.

OurCalling

OurCalling is a local nonprofit that helps clothe, feed, educate and shelter the homeless around DFW. They have opened a warming shelter at 2929 Hickory Street.

They are also taking item donations like hand warmers, soap, toothpaste, and winter clothing at 1702 S. Cesar Chavez Blvd. from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday. 

Austin Street Center

Austin Street Center also helps shelter and support homeless around DFW. They are asking for donations of clothing, bottled water, blankets and monetary donations. Donations can be scheduled by visiting their website here.
